As many as 60% of all American women and men suffer from some form of vein disorder, but women are more often affected.
Varicose veins are dark purple or blue blood vessels raised above the skin surface. They look like bulging cords and are frequently seen on the backs of the calves and on the inside of the leg.
Spider veins appear as short, fine lines, "starburst" clusters, or in a web-like maze. They are most commonly seen in the thighs, ankles, and feet but can also appear on the face. Usually spider veins produce no symptoms but some women may experience bruising, burning pain, aching and leg fatigue, especially during menstrual periods.

According to Michael F. Bardwil, M.D., F.A.C.S., founder of Texas Vein & Cosmetic Specialists, the use of precise, state-of-theart diagnostic testing combined with a thorough vascular examination enables selection of the best treatment for any given patient.
Recurrence of the offending veins is much less common when a thorough initial evaluation is done.
"That is why it is important to go to an experienced vein specialist, one who can choose and then perform any of the many procedures available," explains Dr. Bardwil.

Surgery, coupled with 18 years of experience, allows Dr. Bardwil to know which treatment options are best for you.
"Despite the advent of lasers, the Gold Standard for spider vein treatment is still injection sclerotherapy,” explains Dr. Bardwil. “We use a tiny needle to inject a ‘sclerosing’ solution into the veins. The veins are replaced with scar tissue and they disappear."
Laser treatment of spider veins, Dr. Bardwil notes, is generally more expensive, more painful and not as effective as injections.
In the hands of an experienced surgeon, injection treatment for smaller varicose veins is also quite effective.
